Most weeks, Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson invites someone to join the show who sits on a different side of the political spectrum than himself.

They talk about the latest local, state, and national political news, and try to do it in a way that highlights how we can disagree on many things, but still have a civil, productive conversation.

This week in that role is Dennis Darnoi, a Republican political consultant here in Michigan based in Oakland County.

The conversation starts with the big political news of the day here in Michigan, Democratic nominee for governor Gretchen Whitmer’s choice of Garlin Gilchrist II as her running mate.

“I think it’s a very safe choice,” says Darnoi. “I think picking Garlin is…meant to motivate Detroit voters to talk about a Detroit comeback story which is something Gretchen is going to need to have if she’s going to win in November.”

They also talk about President Trump’s recent moves to strip security clearances from people who have been critical of him or who have been involved into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

“It is concerning,” says Darnoi. “We’re seeing, with this president, setting a precedent things that are just, generally, they haven’t been done. And there’s reasons they haven’t been done. And he’s playing a short-term game, but he’s doing long-term damage.”
