CultureShift: Detroit’s ‘On The Clock’ tour aims to activate rec centers ahead of NFL Draft

The city of Detroit, in partnership with Visit Detroit and the Detroit Sports Commission, is hosting a series of community events through April to help encourage use of the city’s recreation centers and gear up excitement around the 2024 NFL Draft.

The “On The Clock” tour will stop in seven neighborhoods, with each tour stop featuring a unique activity focused on the local community and district. The events will include appearances by Roary, the Detroit Lions’ mascot, Lions’ interactive inflatables, and other football-themed stations, from running the 40-yard dash to a chance to kick a field goal.

Alexis Wiley, co-chair of the NFL Draft organizing committee, says the events are a great way to get Detroiters involved in the excitement leading up to the draft.

“Ensuring that Detroiters really are benefiting and are engaged in the draft, that we’re not just thinking about visitors, has been really front and center in everyone’s mind,” she said, adding that the reason why Detroit landed the Draft in the first place is because of all the work Detroiters have done to make the city a great place to live and visit.

One of the most important takeaways from the “On The Clock” tour, Wiley said, is to get into the neighborhoods and utilize the recreation centers to bring the fun to all Detroiters.

“I think it is imperative upon us as this committee to make sure that we actually leave a lasting impact and make sure that even if you can’t get downtown, you’re able to enjoy and participate in this amazing event.”

The next “On The Clock” tour stop is planned from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Adams Butzel Complex, 10500 Lyndon St., Detroit. All events are free and open to the public.
